Health & Wellness — Rewire the Brain, Restore the Body
Valley Spring Recovery Center integrates health, wellness, and neuroscience-informed practices into every day of treatment. The Health & Wellness program improves brain health, manages withdrawal symptoms, and builds the routines that keep clients in recovery — sleep, movement, stress regulation, education, and medication literacy. The goal is to reduce relapse risk and build long-term stability by strengthening the body, mind, and nervous system together. We believe recovery requires biological rehab, not just abstinence.

What's Inside Valley Spring's Health & Wellness Program?
Valley Spring Recovery Center's Health & Wellness — Rewire the Brain, Restore the Body covers clinical components, therapeutic modalities, and support services delivered across scheduled sessions. Each section below outlines what clients receive during treatment and why each component is part of the clinical model.
The Daily 1 PM Health & Wellness Group
Every weekday at 1 PM, after lunch, Partial Care clients gather for a 60-minute Health & Wellness group. The format rotates across five pillars so every client touches every domain across the week — sleep, movement, nervous-system regulation, psychoeducation, and medication literacy.
Each session opens and closes with a brief process group. That structure lets clients name what they noticed in their body, link the experience back to their recovery goals, and bring the regulation skill into the rest of their day. This is the “Restore” phase of the RAAT model — regulate, rebuild, reinforce.

Clinical Process
How Does Valley Spring Recovery's Health & Wellness — Rewire the Brain, Restore the Body Work?
Valley Spring Recovery Center's Health & Wellness — Rewire the Brain, Restore the Body follows a structured clinical sequence from intake through active treatment to discharge planning. Stage length and intensity are adjusted based on clinical progress and ASAM level-of-care criteria.
Regulate
Phase 1
First week. The nervous system is loud, sleep is broken, mood is unpredictable. The wellness team focuses on grounding, breath, basic sleep hygiene, and gentle movement. Clients learn what PAWS is and why their body feels the way it does.
Rebuild
Phase 2
Weeks 2–4. Movement intensity increases — gym circuits, hikes, shadow boxing — paired with nutrition education and consistent sleep. Yoga and mindfulness move from introduction to daily practice. Medication literacy groups deepen.
Reinforce
Phase 3
Final weeks of Partial Care. Clients choose the two or three practices that belong in their long-term plan and start running them on their own. The wellness team transitions to a coaching role.
Carry Forward
Phase 4
Health & Wellness continues to be available as clients step down into IOP, OP, and the Thrive alumni community. The routines built in Restore travel with the client.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Health & Wellness — Rewire the Brain, Restore the Body at Valley Spring
Is Health & Wellness an extra program?+
No. Health & Wellness is built into Valley Spring's Partial Care program at no additional cost. Every PC client attends the daily 1 PM group as part of standard programming.
What are the five pillars of the Health & Wellness program?+
Sleep, Movement, Trauma-Informed Nervous-System Regulation, Didactic & Psychoeducation, and Medication Literacy. The daily 1 PM group rotates across all five so every client touches every pillar across the week.
Does Valley Spring really have a sleep specialist on staff?+
Yes. Valley Spring is one of fewer than ten New Jersey treatment facilities with a credentialed sleep specialist on staff. Sleep is the number-one driver of stress and anxiety in early recovery and one of the strongest relapse predictors.
What is PAWS and why do you teach it?+
PAWS (Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome) is the cluster of symptoms — sleep disturbance, mood instability, cognitive fog, elevated stress — that can persist for weeks or months after acute withdrawal. Teaching clients what PAWS is removes the catastrophic interpretation that often drives early relapse.
Who runs the medication literacy groups?+
Dr. Michael Olla (Medical Director) and Dr. Stephen LaTourette lead the medication groups personally. Hearing the “why” behind each medication from the prescriber is the strongest predictor of long-term medication adherence.
What kinds of movement does the program include?+
Gym workout circuits, shadow boxing, hikes up a mountain, stretch groups, yoga, walking sessions around local parks, ice baths, sound baths, and reiki. Every movement session is bookended by a process group.
Do you teach yoga and mindfulness?+
Yes. Yoga, mindfulness programming, breath work, and meditation are core to the nervous-system regulation pillar. Practices are trauma-informed and portable — clients can use them outside the building.
Will Health & Wellness continue when I step down from Partial Care?+
Yes. The routines built in Partial Care travel with the client into IOP and OP under the same clinical team. Wellness coaching is also available through the Thrive alumni community.
Is the program appropriate for clients with co-occurring mental health conditions?+
Yes. Valley Spring is dual-licensed for substance use disorder and mental health treatment in New Jersey. The Health & Wellness program is built specifically to regulate the nervous system and stabilize mood for clients with co-occurring conditions.
What if I've never exercised or done yoga before?+
Most clients haven't. Every activity is offered at multiple intensity levels and the wellness team meets each client where they are. The goal is sustainable daily practice, not athletic performance.
