Over the past decade, Rockland County has witnessed a significant rise in opioid overdoses. According to the New York State Department of Health, opioid-related deaths in the county surged by 875% since 2016, with 35 fatalities recorded in that year alone. By 2020, the crisis had escalated, resulting in 236 drug overdoses, including 33 deaths. The majority of these deaths were linked to synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which accounted for 79% of overdose deaths by 2022, a sharp increase from 56% in 2018. This trend mirrors the national increase in synthetic opioid fatalities, which rose by 10% between 2017 and 2018.

In 2017, Rockland County’s opioid-related death rate matched the New York state average at 19.5 deaths per 100,000 residents. However, by 2018, the county saw a notable decrease to a rate of 10.1 per 100,000, suggesting significant local improvements in managing the opioid crisis. In contrast, the state average decreased to 17.2 per 100,000 during the same period.

Despite a slight increase in 2019 to 14.1 deaths per 100,000 residents in Rockland County, it maintained a lower fatality rate compared to the rest of the state, which reported 16.1 deaths per 100,000. By 2020, Rockland County continued to report lower fatality rates from opioid overdoses at 12.2 per 100,000, compared to the state’s rate of 21.8 per 100,000.

Rockland County, like many other regions, faces challenges related to driving under the influence (DUI). The statistics over recent years highlight trends and shifts in DUI incidents, providing insights into the efficacy of interventions and changes in community behavior.

DUI Arrests and Trends:

• Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Arrests: Rockland County reported a significant number of DWI arrests from 2016 to 2020. The numbers have shown a general decline over the years:

  • 2016: 675 DWI arrests

  • 2017: 688 DWI arrests

  • 2018: 626 DWI arrests

  • 2019: 559 DWI arrests

  • 2020: 418 DWI arrests

In 2018, there was an increase in the number of cases where patients were taken to the emergency rooms with opioid overdoses within Rockland County. This went up to 34.4% per 100,000 residents but fell in comparison with what happened across the rest of the state – it dropped down to 68.0% per 100,000 residents. 

Rockland County experienced a decrease in opioid-related ED visits to 25.8% per 100,000 residents in 2019, while the rest of the state also saw a decline to 62.1% per 100,000 residents. Once again, Rockland County reported a lower rate than other counties across New York State. During 2020, while the rest of the state continued seeing a decline (down to 55.0 per 100,000 residents), Rockland County’s opioid-related ED visits slightly increased to 27.2 per 100,000 residents.

How Many Newborns Are Affected by Maternal Drug Use In Rockland County, NY?

From 2017 to 2019, Rockland County had a lower crude rate of newborns whose mothers used drugs compared to the rest of the state per 1,000 discharges. In 2019, Rockland County recorded 11 cases of neonatal withdrawal symptom discharges.

In 2017, there were 2.5 babies with drug issues per 1000 discharged in Rockland County but 15.6 in other parts of the region. This only slightly changed in 2018, when this figure rose to 2.8%, while for the different states in New York, it went down to 14.9%. It stayed at 2.5 in 2019 as well, but now, for the rest of the states, it has decreased even more, up to 12.7 per 1000 discharged.

How Many Drug Arrests for Controlled Substances Occur Annually In Rockland County, NY?

There were 389 arrests for drugs per 10,000 residents in Rockland County. At the same time, other regions of the state had a much higher rate – 26.5 per 10,000 population. The number of drug-related arrests in Rockland County increased slightly to 419 arrests per 10,000 population, as did those throughout the rest of New York State, where they rose to 28.9% per 10k. Consequently, Rockland County continued reporting lower drug arrest rates than other areas within its state.

In 2018, the number of drug-related offenses remained relatively static within Rockland County at 390 arrests per 10,000 persons.

During the year 2018, drug-related arrests in Rockland County had a minimal change, with 390 arrests recorded for every 10,000 people. Meanwhile, other parts of the state experienced a slight increase, having 29.6% drug apprehensions per 10,000 population. 

Just like the previous year, in 2019,391 people were arrested for drugs for every 10,000 citizens in Rockland, which shows that the law enforcement efforts remained unchanged. On the other hand, the drug arrest rate for the rest of the state stood at 27.1% per 10000 population.

There was a significant reduction in drug arrests in Rockland County, where it dropped to 217 arrests per 10,000 population. The rest of the state also recorded lower rates of drug arrest, though not so much, and recorded 17.0 per 10,000 population. However, even after this decrease, Rockland County continued its trend of having fewer drug arrests compared to other states of New York State.
