Al McCarthy has had a diverse career, working in fields such as banking, sheet metal, taxi driving, bus driving, state corrections, and law enforcement, where he served as a police officer, sergeant, and acting Police Chief. Transitioning into mental health and social work, Al became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
He holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration, an M.S. in Education and Administration, an EdS in Advanced Education and Administration, and an MSW from Fordham University, earned while attending night school during his police career in Allendale, NJ.
With over 30 years of sobriety, Al’s long-term recovery profoundly informs his therapeutic approach. Having witnessed the devastating effects of addiction firsthand as a police officer, Al brings a unique perspective to his work, enabling him to understand addiction from all angles. This experience, combined with his professional expertise, makes him a deeply empathetic and effective therapist.
Al specializes in working with first responders and veterans, drawing on his own military and police background to connect with these patients on a personal level. His holistic approach to therapy addresses both the psychological and emotional aspects of mental health, ensuring comprehensive care.
Al is committed to meticulous preparation for group sessions, consistently providing patients with new and valuable insights. His dedication to treating patients and their families with respect and care underscores his deep commitment to fostering lasting recovery and well-being.
What is a fun fact about Al?
I enjoy exercising, I have attained a green belt in Goju Karate. I write poetry and have been published in the N.J. Police Benevolent Association state-wide paper “Cops” for several years running. My pen name was the “Police Poet”. I love to read all kinds of books.
